Meet the creator of the Kulaverse: Tim Metcalfe, Technical Director at KulaHub

Tim Metcalfe is the original architect and developer of KulaHub. As our resident tech guru, he is responsible for providing technical support, maintaining and expanding KulaHub’s existing software.

We caught up with Tim to find out what it’s like to live a day in his shoes.

Growing up, I was always fascinated with our home computers. This may explain why I have been in software development for over 20 years now!

My focus has mostly been around the Microsoft technology stack. It’s mind-blowing to see how the software has evolved over the years.

I understand you developed KulaHub’s original software – can you tell us about that?

I worked with a charity organisation in Leeds that had begun to communicate more frequently via email, instead of sending out paper newsletters.

It was at this point that I got more involved in software development and built a simple email broadcast platform.

In 2009, I met KulaHub’s Business Development Director Andrew Booth and together we developed the software into the CRM it is today.

What is your main role at KulaHub now?

I oversee the technical side of things. This involves two main areas: support and ongoing development.

The technical support varies from maintaining KulaHub’s existing software to sorting out any bug fixes when they arise.

I also assist our Senior Account Manager, Hazel Johnson, with any queries customers may have about KulaHub’s capabilities.

I am also responsible for the ongoing development of KulaHub’s existing software. This involves adding new features and modules based on our client’s feedback.

What does a typical day look like for you?

I usually start my day by checking my emails to make sure nothing urgent has come through overnight.

I will then go into full technical support mode and check KulaHub’s system to make sure everything is operating as it should.

If there are no support queries to respond to, I will spend the next part of my day building the next version of KulaHub—this is a project I have been working on for the past 12 months and it involves moving KulaHub’s system onto Microsoft’s new development framework.

Instead of adding more capabilities to the existing system, we have decided to start again from a clean slate.

This will mean a whole refresh of KulaHub’s software so that it is up to date with new technology.

What do you enjoy best about what you do?

I enjoy the satisfaction of knowing that customers are automating their workflows and being more productive as a result of KulaHub.

If a task previously took your team two hours to complete but now takes five minutes then that’s a win in my books!

Can you tell us a bit more about your hobbies?

Software development is more than just a job for me because there’s so much to learn.

In my spare time, I’ll do research to keep up to date with the software and services Microsoft provides within their cloud platform.

Not only is this important because it’s where KulaHub’s system resides, but it also allows me to see what else we can incorporate into our software.
